"Wastebusters" Green Cleaning Video

This video was produced by the CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, in conjunction with the Department of Public Health, to assist schools to educate school staff, parents, students and the public about green cleaners and to encourage compliance with the 2009 CT School Green Cleaning Products law.

Why this video?

  • Although virtually all CT school districts have done a good job of implementing a green cleaning products program, there is an ongoing problem with staff and parents bringing in non-green (illegal) cleaners, sanitizers and disinfectants.  The law ((Conn. Gen. Stat. Sections 10-220 (a), 10-231g) clearly states “No parent, guardian, teacher or staff member may bring into the school facility any consumer product which is intended to clean, deodorize, sanitize or disinfect.”

  • A recent survey of CT school facilities directors found that almost 90% reported finding non-green cleaners like bleach in the classroom and about 70% find them in other areas of the school.

  • We have received reports from parents who have received notices from the school district asking them to bring in products like Clorox wipes.  This does not comply with the law and exposes children and staff to harmful chemicals.

A major goal is to have every school district – and school – post the video link below on their web site (along with the required green cleaning policies information) and alert all staff and parents to view the video.   Please urge your school district to post this video.
